Use What’s Already in Your Hand
Moses had plenty of reasons to feel unprepared. He questioned his ability, worried people would not believe him, and focused on what he lacked. God began with a simpler question: “What is that in your hand?” It was only a staff—an ordinary tool Moses already used every day. But placed under God’s direction, that familiar object became part of an extraordinary assignment.

“Then the Lord said to him, ‘What is that in your hand?’ ‘A staff,’ he replied.” —Exodus 4:2
Today’s Message
Moses had plenty of reasons to feel unprepared. He questioned his ability, worried people would not believe him, and focused on what he lacked.
God began with a simpler question: “What is that in your hand?”
It was only a staff—an ordinary tool Moses already used every day. But placed under God’s direction, that familiar object became part of an extraordinary assignment.
We often delay action while waiting for better resources, more confidence, more knowledge, or perfect conditions. Preparation matters, but endless preparation can become a respectable disguise for fear.
What you have may not be enough to complete the entire assignment. It may be enough to take the first faithful step.
You may already have thirty minutes, one useful skill, a phone, a relationship, a small amount of money, an empty table, or the ability to listen. None of those looks dramatic. Neither did a shepherd’s staff.
God is not asking you to deny real limitations. He is asking you to stop using what is missing as an excuse to ignore what is available.
Confidence often follows action; it rarely arrives before it. Ask, “What can I do faithfully today with what I already have?” Then begin there.
Today’s Practice
Complete a ten-minute “in your hand” inventory:
- Name one delayed action. Write down something useful you keep postponing until conditions improve.
- List what is already available. Include your time, skills, tools, experience, relationships, and access—not what you wish you had.
- Choose one small move. Take an action that can be completed in twenty minutes or less.
- Identify the true next need. After acting, decide what resource is genuinely required next. Do not solve problems that have not appeared yet.
Use the first resource before searching for the fifth. Let action reveal what you actually need.
Final Thought
Stop overlooking the ordinary thing God may already be ready to use.
Closing Prayer
“Lord, forgive me for focusing so much on what I lack that I overlook what You have already provided. Show me the time, abilities, tools, and opportunities already within reach. Give me the courage to take the first faithful step, the wisdom to prepare when preparation is truly needed, and the discipline to stop hiding behind delay. Use what is in my hand for the purpose You place before me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
